KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — Two men from Kentucky are celebrating after bringing home a combined $100,000 from $50 scratch-off tickets.
Chris Hurley carried his winning ticket in his pocket for two days before scratching it, almost deciding not to buy it at all. The Pikeville man told lottery officials he nearly walked away without purchasing the ticket.
“I actually walked out to the truck and turned around and went back, and I only bought one,” Hurley explained. “I scratched it on the way to work and thought I had won $500. Then I kept scratching and realized it was much more. I couldn’t believe it.”
Hurley claimed the game’s $50,000 second prize, taking home $36,000 after taxes. Food City in Pikeville, where he bought the winning ticket, will receive $500.
He and his wife, Andrea, said their first thought was to help others.
“We believe blessings are meant to be shared,” Andrea said. “Our church is growing fast, and we want to help expand programs for kids and support local families.”
The next day, a man from Pulaski County drove to lottery headquarters with a $50 Instant Millionaire ticket worth $50,000.
Richard Coleman said he stopped at the Southern Express in Somerset for gas and ended up buying the last Millionaire ticket on the roll.
“I don’t do it for a living, I do it for enjoyment,” Coleman said about playing the lottery.
He said he was stunned when he used the lottery app to confirm his win. Coleman also received $36,000 after taxes and told lottery officials, “It’s going straight to the bank.”
“Next time you see me, it’ll be for that $3 million,” the winner joked.
In 2025, the Kentucky Lottery paid out more than $1.6 billion in prizes, according to lottery officials.
