As winter weather approaches, drivers in Kentucky and Indiana must prioritize safety by staying informed about road conditions. Here’s what to know.

KENTUCKY, USA — The winter season is here, and preparing ahead of time can help you travel safely.

If you regularly drive on Kentucky or Indiana roads, it’s best to check road conditions before heading out.

You can visit the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) or the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) websites for the latest traffic updates.

KYTC reminds drivers to follow the “Four P’s” of safety: prepare, plan, prevent, and pack.

When hazardous weather hits, travel only when it’s necessary during major snow events.

Pack an emergency kit with ice scrapers, jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, a cell phone charger, non-perishable snacks, and a first aid kit in case you become stranded. It’s also helpful to include a shovel and a bag of sand or kitty litter.

Drive slowly — KYTC says stopping takes more time and distance in bad weather. Keep your eyes on the road, brake early and gently, especially near intersections, off-ramps, bridges, or shaded areas. These spots are prone to black ice.

Make sure your vehicle is ready for winter. Check the battery, tire pressure, and brakes. Ensure the heater, defroster, headlights, and windshield wipers work properly.

Understanding winter weather alerts
Advisory — Conditions may cause significant inconvenience and could be hazardous.
Watch — Severe winter conditions, such as heavy snow or ice, are possible, but timing and location are uncertain.
Warning — Four or more inches of snow or sleet are expected in 12 hours, six or more inches in 24 hours, or a quarter-inch or more of ice. Travel should be limited during a winter weather warning.
