LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Surveillance footage from the Louisville airport reveals new angles of the UPS Flight 2976 crash on Nov. 4.
Six videos were made public by the Louisville Regional Airport Authority following an open records request from WDRB. Five of the cameras, placed throughout the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, captured the MD-11 plane’s crash off Grade Lane.
The plane only reached about 30 feet in the air before crashing, bursting into flames as it hit multiple businesses. Fourteen people were killed, including the three crew members, and 23 others were injured.
One of the most dramatic clips comes from an airport gate camera. The footage shows the plane’s undercarriage passing overhead, with engine fire visible on the ground. The crash itself happens off-screen, but debris and smoke make the disaster evident. Within minutes, airport fire crews and police arrived on the scene.
Another video captures the plane accelerating down the runway before the engine breaks off, followed by smoke and flames erupting.
Photos from the surveillance videos were included in the preliminary National Transportation Safety Board report. The NTSB confirmed the footage shows the engine detaching and catching fire before a massive smoke plume rose from the crash site, noting cracks in the left wing’s engine mount as part of the investigation.
