More than 25 years after fleeing war-torn Kosovo, Zekije Hasani has turned a story of survival into one of remarkable success — now serving as store lead at a Walmart in Richmond, Kentucky.
Hasani recalls the terrifying journey that forced her and her husband to abandon their home in May 1999. As they walked toward Macedonia seeking refuge, they were captured by enemy forces but managed to escape.
“For two nights and two days we walked through the mountains,” Hasani said. “It was scary — we saw houses burning, heard gunshots, and saw dead bodies.”
After eight weeks in a refugee camp, her family arrived in Lexington, where a crowd of Americans greeted them with welcoming signs.
“I saw about a hundred people waiting for us,” she said. “I was stunned — they were holding signs saying ‘Welcome to the United States.’”
In 2002, speaking very little English, Hasani began working at Walmart’s apparel department. Over two decades later, she leads the store — a testament to her resilience and determination.
“Everyone has a voice, everyone is valued, and everyone has the opportunity to succeed,” she said.
Her Walmart team has become like family, especially after she lost her husband last year.
“Last year I lost my husband, and it was harder for me than war,” Hasani shared tearfully. “Coming here has been my therapy. I’m surrounded by people I love and who love me.”
Hasani credits her success to her coworkers, customers, and Walmart leadership for believing in her.
“I couldn’t be where I am today without them,” she said.
Grateful for her faith and the life she’s built, Hasani remains devoted to her role.
“I thank God every day for bringing us here,” she said. “That’s something I can never thank Him enough for.”
