As fall arrives and temperatures cool, hikers are flocking to Daniel Boone National Forest and Red River Gorge to enjoy Kentucky’s scenic beauty. However, recent serious hiking incidents have prompted search and rescue teams to issue safety reminders.
Preparation is key
Kevin Osbourn of Wolfe County Search and Rescue emphasized the importance of preparation.
“By being prepared in advance, staying on the trails, bringing the essentials, charging that phone, you can really enjoy the gorge safely. That’s what it’s all about, keeping you and your family safe,” Osbourn said.
Officials also stressed that preparedness begins at home. Hikers should have a plan in case of emergencies, including checking weather alerts, taking shelter when needed, and keeping an emergency kit on hand.
Know your limits
Osbourn urged hikers to be realistic about their capabilities and avoid trails beyond their skill level. If someone becomes lost or disoriented, contacting emergency services immediately is critical.
Technology can help
Keeping location services enabled on smart devices can significantly speed up rescue efforts for lost hikers.
By following these precautions, Kentucky hikers can safely enjoy the state’s vibrant fall scenery while reducing risks on the trails.
