LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Jefferson County Public Schools has confirmed a case of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, at Atherton High School.
Parents and staff received a letter on Monday, Sept. 29, notifying them of the case and providing information on symptoms, treatment, and prevention.
The letter emphasized that pertussis spreads easily and can cause severe coughing, especially in babies and people with certain health conditions. Immunization remains the best protection, and families were urged to check their child’s vaccination status by contacting the school nurse or JCPS Health & Wellness at (502) 485-3387.
Key points shared with families included:
-
Pertussis often begins like a cold with sneezing, runny nose, and a mild cough. Severe coughing fits may appear about 10 days later.
-
Children showing symptoms should stay home and see a health care provider. They can return to school only after being cleared by the provider or completing a full course of prescribed antibiotics.
-
Families with children or members who are not fully immunized should contact their health provider or a local pharmacy for vaccines. For those without a provider or health insurance, JCPS can help arrange immunizations at school or other locations by calling the health and wellness office at 502-485-3387.
