Kentucky officially entered fall at 2:19 PM Eastern on Monday, and the seasonal change brought noticeable impacts on the weather. After nearly five weeks of very little rainfall, scattered showers and storms returned Sunday, the final day of summer, and continued Monday. These storms provided widespread, beneficial rain, with a few stronger cells producing gusty winds and hail. Cloud cover and rain also kept afternoon highs in the low 80s.

Short-Term Forecast

Monday Night: Scattered showers and storms. Lows in the mid-60s. Winds S 5-10 mph.

Tuesday: Partly sunny with a few storms possible. Highs in the low 80s. Winds SW 5-10 mph.

Tuesday Night: More rain and storms return. Lows in the mid-60s. Winds SW 5-10 mph.

Showers and storms should continue into early Tuesday, especially across southern and southeastern Kentucky as a mid-level wave moves eastward. Daytime hours may bring some dry periods between systems, though rain gear is recommended. Afternoon highs should remain in the low 80s, slightly above average for late September.

Midweek Outlook

A stronger low-pressure system will bring a cold front through the region mid to late week, producing another round of rain and storms. With ample moisture from the south, widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected. There is potential for a few strong to severe storms late Wednesday into Thursday, with damaging winds and hail as the main threats. Currently, the Storm Prediction Center has much of the state in a Level 1 severe weather risk, though upgrades to Level 2 are possible. Afternoon highs will remain in the upper 70s.

Weekend Preview

By the weekend, drier air is expected to return to the Ohio Valley, reducing rain chances. The rainfall over the week should help ease ongoing drought conditions in the Bluegrass. Most fall festivals this weekend should enjoy mainly dry conditions with comfortable afternoon highs in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.
