22 pounds of cocaine seized during Mississippi traffic stop, Florida couple apprehended

A routine Mississippi interstate traffic stop resulted in the seizure of 22 pounds of cocaine and $10,000 in cash Tuesday afternoon.

According to WLOX News in Biloxi, deputies from the HCSO Criminal Interdiction Division stopped a gray Kia Sportage for a traffic violation at 1:30 p.m. on I-10 eastbound near the 33-mile marker in Gulfport.

Deputies identified the driver as Chloe Rankin, and the passenger as Jason Acevedo, both from Clearwater, Florida. Sheriff Haley stated that the pair was returning to Florida from a trip to Houston, Texas.

A US Border Patrol K9 unit arrived on the site and alerted deputies to the presence of narcotics. During a later search of the vehicle, investigators recovered 10 kilos (22 pounds) of cocaine and more than $10,000 in illicit currency hidden inside a duffel bag.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) rushed to the location and took over the investigation. Both Rankin and Acevedo were brought into the Harrison County Jail on federal drug trafficking charges.
