Mobile man sentenced to life in prison in child sexual exploitation case

A Mobile man has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually exploiting children.

Tyler McIlwain, 31, of Mobile, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty on March 25, 2026, to sexual exploitation of a minor and attempted enticement of a minor, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

According to the announcement, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force got a report that McIlwain possessed child sexual abuse materials. Deputies investigated his social media accounts and cell phone and discovered situations where he distributed child sexual abuse material.

Investigators discovered a video showing McIlwain sexually molesting a youngster.

A federal district judge sentenced McIlwain to life in prison and set a 15-year supervised release period if he was freed. He must also receive sex offender and mental health treatment.

McIlwain must register as a sex offender and pay $15,000 in reparations plus $200 in special fees.

“Our ICAC investigators did outstanding work on this case from the very beginning,” commented Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch. “Their investigation uncovered deeply disturbing criminal activity involving child exploitation, which resulted in federal charges and a guilty plea.” Cases like this highlight the essential role of our Internet Crimes Against Children unit.

“We will continue working with our federal partners to identify those who prey on children and hold offenders accountable.”
