LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An 11-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound in Louisville’s Watterson Park neighborhood over the weekend has died.
His school confirmed his death in a letter sent to parents. The letter identified him as Cristian Oliva Calderon.
Calderon attended Goldsmith Elementary, located near the Bon Air neighborhood.
“During his time in our Goldsmith community, he made a positive difference in the lives of others in our building. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. We thank them for allowing us to share in his life,” the letter said.
WLKY spoke with his father, Alex Oliva, who said: “He was a very fun-loving boy. He liked soccer and helping at school. He had many plans. His birthday was coming up, and all he wanted to do was play soccer.”
Police said the shooting occurred around 7:11 p.m. Saturday in the 3500 block of Bluegrass Park Drive, off Newburg Road.
Officers arrived at the scene and found Cristian suffering from a gunshot wound. They took him to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, but he later died.
LMPD said two teenagers are in custody in connection with the shooting. A 14-year-old faces charges of first-degree assault and possession of a handgun by a minor.
A 17-year-old faces charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-offense possession of a handgun by a minor, and tampering with physical evidence.
LMPD’s Homicide Unit is handling the investigation.
