A former Madison County councilman and preacher who had been on the run for more than two years will now face 30 years in prison for a variety of felony child sex crimes.
On Wednesday, FOX59/CBS4 announced that 58-year-old Steven Sumner was sentenced to 30 years in the Indiana Department of Correction after pleading guilty to Child Molesting (Level 1 Felony), Rape (Level 3 Felony), and Possession of Child Pornography (Level 6 Felony). In addition, he was sentenced to five years probation.
Previous reports described Sumner’s capture by U.S. Marshals in Kentucky in 2025 after being on the run since 2023. Sumner was facing charges at the time of his arrest in December 2020, after officials discovered photographs of the youngster he allegedly assaulted after seizing his cell phone.
Sumner resigned from his council post in May 2020 when the allegations were brought to light, implicating him in a number of instances with an underage female. These included unwanted touching and allegedly giving her with booze.
