One person was killed and three others — including a child — were wounded in a shooting Wednesday night at a high school graduation ceremony in Northern California, officials said.
A Fairfield Police Department spokesperson said the shooting occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Fairfield High School, where Sem Yeto High School was holding its graduation ceremony, southwest of Sacramento.
One of the four shooting victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining three were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
Among those hospitalized were an 11-year-old child and two adults, aged 20 and 25, police said. The victim who died was 18 years old.
Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez posted on Facebook that authorities had launched a search for the shooter.
In a statement to CBS News Sacramento, a Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District spokesperson confirmed the shooting took place after the graduation ceremony had concluded.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. No suspect description has been made available.
The Solano County Sheriff’s Office said it is assisting Fairfield police with the investigation.
Sem Yeto is a continuation high school that shares a campus with Fairfield High. The school district said classes will proceed as scheduled through the remainder of the week.
