LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Councilman JP Lyninger has introduced legislation to designate the city as a Safe Haven for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

The proposed ordinance would prohibit the use of local resources to detain people seeking gender-affirming healthcare.

It would also block Metro Government from sharing information about an individual’s gender identity with outside authorities.

Additionally, the measure includes protections for gender expression and performance.

“So I am going to do my part to try and protect my community,” Lyninger said. “To tell trans people that they matter, that they’re valued, and that Louisville is going to stand with them and that’s why we’ve brought forward the Trans safe haven ordinance.”

The proposal is scheduled for discussion at the next Public Safety Committee meeting on April 15.
