GOLDEN POND, Ky. (WSMV) — A wildfire in southern Kentucky expanded rapidly Sunday before crews were able to bring it fully under control.
According to an update at 5:28 p.m., officials with the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area said the Cassity Fire grew to 450 acres and is now 100% contained.
Earlier in the day, the fire had spread to 150 acres after initially being estimated at around 30 acres when crews first responded to the blaze off Road 141.
The fire impacted parts of the north-south trail system as it expanded.
In a midday update, the Forest Service said the wildfire was only 20% contained at that time and continued to grow.
“We are asking visitors to please avoid the area and be cautious of fire crews and equipment,” officials said.
Authorities have not released a cause for the fire.
