Over two weeks, LMPD responded to three fights and shootings at Waterfront Park and the Big Four Bridge.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Police responded to a third incident in two weeks at the Big Four Bridge on Saturday, when the bridge was lit in red and blue.

LMPD officials said officers broke up fights at the bridge involving “mostly, if not entirely, unaccompanied juveniles,” according to witnesses.

A day earlier, a man was shot and killed near the splash pad, an area where families gather during warmer months.

LMPD and Jeffersonville Police increased patrols after a March 7 fight that spread on social media.

Despite added security measures, incidents continue to occur in an area filled with lighting, cameras and police presence.

Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore said in a statement, “It’s time the Mayor of Louisville answers some tough questions about his side of the river.”

WAVE News has repeatedly reported on similar incidents on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River over the past decade.

In the last 10 years, WAVE has reported at least 11 major fights or shootings at Waterfront Park or the Big Four Bridge.

A spokesperson for Mayor Greenberg’s office said the city will “continue to assess all options to improve safety in the area.”

Waterfront Park leaders said they are also working to address the issue, releasing a statement:

“We are in close coordination with the Louisville Metro Police Department, which has increased its presence and monitoring on the Big Four Bridge and in surrounding areas. The safety of our visitors is a top priority, and we take any disruption to the park experience seriously.

Waterfront Park welcomes more than 2.5 million visits per year and is one of the region’s most beloved public spaces. We are committed to ensuring it remains a safe, welcoming destination for families, visitors, and the community.”

An LMPD spokesperson said the department will continue adjusting staffing as needed.
