A fraudulent veteran charity in Kentucky has been shut down by a court after soliciting donations despite never serving in the military.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A group claiming to be veterans and seeking donations from Kentuckians has been shut down, according to Attorney General Russell Coleman.
“Your Hometown Heroes, Inc.” operated in Marion County and was ordered by a Franklin County Circuit Court judge to cease all solicitation efforts and operations.
The organization has now been permanently barred from participating in any charitable activity or fundraising in Kentucky. The court vacated its corporate charter, and officials revoked or suspended its licenses, permits and certificates to conduct business in the state.
Your Hometown Heroes was also ordered to pay a $421,000 monetary judgment — $1,000 per day for 421 days of failing to comply with the court.
Coleman said the Office of Consumer Protection launched an investigation after individuals connected to the group were arrested in Marion County for allegedly lying to obtain donations.
According to arrest documents, the group told potential donors they were veterans even though they had never served in the military. Coleman said one member is scheduled to go to trial in May in Marion County.
“Stealing in the name of those who have sacrificed for our country is not just fraud—it is a betrayal of honor itself,” Coleman said. “These bad actors preyed on the generosity and patriotism of Kentuckians, and we are proud to shut them down.”
Nicole Horseman, state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Department of Kentucky, said she appreciated Coleman holding those who exploit veterans accountable.
“Veterans earned their benefits through service and sacrifice, and they deserve both protection and respect,” she said.
