Kroger is moving forward with plans to close 60 stores nationwide, though it remains uncertain how many locations in Kentucky could be affected.

The Cincinnati, Ohio-based grocery chain confirmed to the Texas newspaper El Adelantado that two Houston-area stores are set to close April 10, following three recent closures in the same region, according to The Independent.

Reporting from one of the impacted stores, Fox 26 Houston said the company issued a statement explaining the decision. The closure “is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business,” the company said, adding that employees would have opportunities to transfer to other locations.

Why is Kroger closing stores in 2026?

In June 2025, Kroger announced plans to shut down approximately 60 stores nationwide between mid-2025 and the end of 2026.

In its first-quarter 2025 sales report, the company said the closures would provide a “modest financial benefit.”

The 60 stores represent about 5% of Kroger’s roughly 1,200 locations and are expected to result in about 1,000 employee layoffs.
