The real-life story of a neglected dog in Kentucky is being turned into a Hollywood film.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It’s a face and story that’s impossible to forget.
Severely neglected and close to death, Ethan weighed only a third of what he should have when someone abandoned him and the Kentucky Humane Society took him in.
He quickly captured hearts across the state — especially Jeff Callaway’s, who later adopted him.
“This little dog that was in the worst shape you could be in and needed all the love and support that he could get, is now the one giving that support back to others,” Callaway said.
Over the past five years, Ethan’s remarkable recovery has sparked meaningful change, including the passage of Ethan’s Law, an anti-cruelty measure in Kentucky.
Ethan’s journey of perseverance, hope, and compassion — a cause close to screenwriter Tane McClure — has drawn a star-studded cast featuring Sean Patrick Flanery, Selma Blair, and Trevor Donovan.
Filming is set to begin soon in Bardstown and Louisville.
Callaway said reading the screenplay moved him to tears, even though it is only inspired by Ethan’s story.
“I know it’s not a documentary, but the parts that are true to life I want to be as true to life as they possibly can. There’ll be people that have followed Ethan for all these years that will remember and recognize things when they pop up in the movie,” he said.
Callaway hopes the film raises awareness about animal cruelty while highlighting the dedication of people — and dogs — working to make a difference.
“It’ll be a story that if you’re from Kentucky you’ll be very proud to be a part of. You can take your kids to it, it’s gonna be a very, very cool thing,” he said.
The film, titled Ethan Almighty – Ethan’s Law, does not yet have a release date.
