Officials with the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security are warning the public that cychlorphine, a powerful synthetic drug reported to be ten times stronger than fentanyl, has now been identified in the state.

Authorities have linked the drug to overdoses in areas across the Commonwealth, including neighboring Tennessee.

“This substance is frequently mixed with other illegal narcotics, placing users at extreme risk of unintentional exposure,” KOHS said in a social media post Friday. “Its presence is expected to expand to additional areas within the Commonwealth.”

Officials are urging healthcare workers and first responders to exercise extreme caution when handling unknown substances, wear appropriate personal protective equipment and treat any suspected cychlorphine-related overdoses as medical emergencies.
