Louisville, Kentucky – Temperatures climbed into the 60s and 70s across central Kentucky Tuesday afternoon, but rain showers are expected to develop this evening as a cold front pushes through the region, potentially affecting travel along Interstate 64 and Interstate 65.

According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, showers will form along the advancing cold front and track southeast across central Kentucky tonight. Rain will be the main concern, though forecasters say there is a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms during the evening hours. Severe weather is not expected at this time.

Temperatures are forecast to drop into the upper 20s to upper 30s overnight as the front moves through, bringing a sharp shift from the unseasonably warm afternoon. Periods of rain could create slick roads during the evening commute and overnight travel, especially on major routes such as I-64, I-65, and the Gene Snyder Freeway.

Conditions will improve Wednesday as cooler, drier air settles into the area. Skies should be partly cloudy, with highs ranging from 42 to 49 degrees. Northwest winds behind the front will bring more typical February weather back to the region.

Thursday is expected to stay dry but mostly cloudy, with highs between 40 and 47 degrees. No additional precipitation is forecast through Thursday, offering a break after Tuesday night’s rain.

The National Weather Service said rainfall totals are not expected to be excessive, but residents should stay alert to changing conditions during the evening. Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads and leave extra stopping distance, particularly when traveling at night.

The timing of the showers could especially affect commuters, students, and service workers heading home after sunset Tuesday.

Residents are advised to monitor updated forecasts in case the coverage or timing of the rain changes as the cold front continues moving through central Kentucky.
