Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was taken to a hospital Monday night “out of an abundance of caution” after experiencing flu-like symptoms, his spokesperson David Popp said Tuesday.

The Kentucky senator missed key Senate votes on both Monday and Tuesday, according to Politico. Popp said McConnell’s “prognosis is positive” and noted that he remains in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate duties.

McConnell has faced several health scares in recent years, particularly in 2023, when he suffered a fall at a Washington, D.C., dinner event that resulted in a concussion and a minor rib fracture. He was hospitalized for several days following that incident.

Later that year, McConnell also experienced multiple episodes in which he abruptly stopped speaking and appeared to freeze. One such incident occurred in July 2023, when he paused for about 20 seconds during a Senate leadership press conference at the Capitol.
