LEXINGTON, Ky. — With frigid temperatures persisting, many homeowners and renters are preparing for higher energy bills in February as heating systems run nonstop.
Kentucky Utilities and LG&E are offering advice to help customers conserve energy during the extended cold snap.
Liz Pratt, senior director of communications for Kentucky Utilities and LG&E, explained, “It is that time of year, with temperatures remaining below freezing, when we see our heating systems working overtime.”
Simple Thermostat Adjustments Can Reduce Costs
Pratt emphasized understanding how your heating system operates. “Heating systems pull in outside air and condition it to match your thermostat setting. Small adjustments can make a difference,” she said.
Lowering the thermostat by just a couple of degrees while maintaining comfort can help reduce energy costs, Pratt noted.
Keep Cold Air Out, Warm Air In
Pratt advised sealing drafts and using curtains or blinds to prevent heat loss. “Draft stoppers on windows and doors help. Keep blinds closed to block cold air, but open sun-facing blinds when it’s sunny—natural sunlight can warm your room,” she said.
Payment Assistance and Energy Programs
Kentucky Utilities also offers energy efficiency programs to help customers save. For those struggling to pay bills, assistance is available.
Pratt said, “Customers can set up payment arrangements through our self-serve options. If you anticipate difficulty paying your bill, please contact us.”
Customers with advanced meters can monitor real-time energy usage through the Kentucky Utilities website to track and manage consumption.
