The LMHA executive director said residents can return home only after crews replace a critical and “rare” part damaged in the fire.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – At St. Catherine Court, Tina Moody stood in the doorway of the 15-story public housing tower with her bag packed and her patience wearing thin.

“I mean, they didn’t give us enough time really to get everything we need,” Moody said. “I still got a bunch of stuff up there that needs to be taken care of before I have to vacate.”

Tina Moody is one of the 144 residents displaced after an electrical fire cut off power at St. Catherine Court.

No one was injured, but extreme cold weather prompted officials with the Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA) to temporarily relocate residents to stay with friends, family, or in hotel rooms.

“We understand how incredibly disruptive and stressful this has been for our residents, and we do not take that lightly,” LMHA Executive Director Elizabeth Strojan said Monday. “So that’s why we are working around the clock to restore power safely and communicate clearly with residents.”

Strojan said bringing residents back home depends on replacing a critical and “rare” part damaged during the fire.

“It’s like finding a needle in a haystack,” Strojan said. “And that’s what we want to get away from. It is very frustrating when these things happen that we’re not ahead of them. We’re responding, and our systems are old, so we have to locate a part here, there and everywhere.”

Officials said residents could return as early as Wednesday if crews locate the part quickly.

For residents like Tina Moody, that timeline still feels too long.

“I had to go back upstairs and get some more stuff,” Moody said. “I’m sick, so I’m not even supposed to be out here running around like this.”
