LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Jefferson County Public School police officer sprang into action Tuesday when he noticed an apartment building on fire while leaving work.

JCPS School Resource Officer Bruce Turner was heading home on Dec. 16 when he saw the blaze. Turner said a car had crashed into the building off Westport Road in east Louisville, likely hitting a gas line and igniting the fire.

Turner saw another officer running into the building and followed her, not wanting her to face the fire alone.

“I knew we needed to do something, I knew there was an officer up there,” Turner said. “I wasn’t going to let her go by herself. Once I saw that the conditions were getting worse, I knew I needed to find her. We need to go.”

Turner said he believes anyone in his position would have acted the same way.

Louisville Metro Police confirmed the building was evacuated, and no one inside was injured.
