LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A car crash triggered a fire at an apartment complex off Westport Road on Dec. 16, according to local officials.
Louisville police said officers responded around 4:07 p.m. to reports of an injury accident at the intersection of Westport Road and Langdon Drive. An initial investigation found that two vehicles collided in a T-bone crash, causing one of the cars to leave the roadway and strike a gas line before crashing into an apartment building.
Police said the impact ignited a fire in the building, prompting officers to begin evacuating residents. No one inside the apartments was reported injured, and no officers were hurt.
St. Matthews Fire Chief Nick Clark praised an LMPD major who witnessed the crash and went to the second floor to alert residents about the fire and urge them to evacuate. Clark also thanked a JCPS officer who later escorted the LMPD major out of the building once conditions became too dangerous.
Clark emphasized that no rescues were required. Residents inside the building at the time were notified and evacuated safely.
Crews are still assessing the extent of the damage, but Clark said the roof of the apartment building collapsed and both floors sustained heavy damage.
LG&E crews responded to the scene to shut off the gas.
Clark said TARC is sending two buses to the apartment complex to provide heat and temporary shelter for displaced residents until the Red Cross arrives.
Police said one driver was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the other driver received treatment at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and police said no charges are expected at this time.
