MAYSLICK, Ky. (WSMV) – Two men are in custody after allegedly pointing a laser at a Kentucky State Police helicopter and firing shots at it while officers were searching for a missing 11-year-old in Robertson County.
KSP says the incident happened two weeks ago during an aerial search for the child. In addition to the state investigation, the FBI is also reviewing the Nov. 3 incident.
According to a KSP press release, the helicopter was hit with multiple laser strikes near the Mayslick community in Mason County. The pilot and tactical flight officer were repeatedly targeted by a laser beam coming from the ground.
Investigators say the men also fired multiple shots at the aircraft, creating a serious risk to both the flight crew and people on the ground.
The tactical flight officer’s eyes “sustained possible physical injury,” according to KSP. The agency noted that laser strikes can momentarily blind or disorient pilots, potentially causing catastrophic consequences.
Troopers arrested Jason McKee, 49, and Donald W. Boone, 55, at a home along U.S. 62 near Mayslick. KSP says McKee is from Mayslick and Boone is from Aberdeen, Ohio.
Both were booked into the Mason County Detention Center the day after the alleged laser strike.
McKee faces charges including wanton endangerment of a police officer, wanton endangerment by discharging a firearm, and directing a laser or light at an aircraft that disrupts travel. His bond is listed at $100,000.
Boone is charged with wanton endangerment of a police officer and a drug-related offense. His bond is set at $50,100.
