Ohio–Kentucky–West Virginia homeowners urged to prepare for early winter chill

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As colder air moves into the Ohio Valley, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is urging residents in Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia to winterize their homes ahead of the season’s first hard freeze.

NOAA officials warn that early cold snaps can lead to frozen pipes, higher heating costs, and safety hazards if homeowners are unprepared. Taking a few preventive steps now can help avoid costly damage later.

Homeowners are advised to:

• Inspect chimneys and heating systems before use.

• Clean gutters to prevent ice dams and drainage problems.

• Insulate attics and exposed pipes to retain heat and stop freezing.

• Seal windows and doors with caulk or weather-stripping to block drafts.

• Install and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with fresh batteries.

• Prepare emergency kits with blankets, flashlights, and nonperishable food.

NOAA also encourages residents to check on elderly neighbors and vulnerable family members to ensure they are ready for the coming cold.
