A new peer-reviewed study claims to have found verified evidence that unidentified objects—possibly of non-human origin—were observing nuclear test sites as far back as the 1940s, decades before the launch of any human-made satellites.
Led by Dr. Beatriz Villarroel from the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics in Sweden, the research uncovered a striking pattern: mysterious bright “transients” in the sky increased during periods of nuclear testing between 1949 and 1957. These objects appeared reflective—“like mirrors”—and sometimes rotated, resembling descriptions of flying saucers.
Published in Scientific Reports, the study analyzed historical photographs from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey in California, taken during early nuclear testing by the U.S., U.K., and Soviet Union. Researchers found that these transients were 45% more likely to appear before or after a nuclear test, and sightings rose 8.5% on testing days.
“These are objects before Sputnik One, when humans had nothing up there,” Villarroel said. “They need to be really flat, reflective like a mirror—and I don’t know anything natural that looks like that.”
The team identified more than 100,000 transients, including about 60 that appeared in connection with nuclear events. Since they predated human satellites, researchers ruled out man-made explanations.
While Villarroel acknowledged the possibility of unknown natural causes, she said no current scientific explanation fits the data. “From what I see, I cannot find any other consistent explanation than that we are looking at something artificial,” she told NewsNation.
Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart called the findings “the first scientific evidence of a non-human intelligence.”
The study adds to a growing body of research linking unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) to Cold War–era nuclear activities. Government documents from the same period have long hinted at UFO sightings near nuclear facilities, though many have been dismissed as myths or misidentifications.
Whether these objects are still orbiting Earth remains unknown—but if they were truly built by a non-human intelligence, researchers say they could still be watching us today.
