A 27-year-old basketball player whose roots trace back to the Beverly-Morgan Park community on Chicago’s South Side has emerged as a remarkable figure both on and off the court.
Cameron Burrell has traversed the globe, yet his identity remains deeply tied to Chicago , even as a proud member of the Harlem Globetrotters.
The Globetrotters have captivated audiences for over a century, celebrated for their extraordinary blend of comedic showmanship and genuine athletic talent on the basketball court.
Cam has been part of the organization for three years, and he credits the experience with helping him step outside his comfort zone and grow as an individual.
“The players on the team, everybody has their own personalities,” he said. “They used to call me the silent assassin, just because I was so quiet.”
Reserved in demeanor, perhaps, but there is considerably more depth within Burrell’s 6-foot-7 frame than meets the eye.
Much like his three siblings, Cam earned an athletic scholarship to college, having been immersed in competitive sports for virtually his entire life.
“I was a multi-sport athlete. I kind of just got too tall for football,” he said. “Basketball was my way to go.”
A state champion during his time at Morgan Park High School, Cam continued to excel at the collegiate level with aspirations of reaching the professional ranks. However, in 2023, an unexpected opportunity arose in the form of an offer to play professional basketball overseas.
“As I was about to sign the contract, I got a call from a Globetrotters’ scout, which was honestly a blessing,” Cam said.
Following a successful tryout with the organization, he received the news that he had made the roster , on his birthday, no less.
“When he said he was going to be a Globetrotter, we were like, ‘What?’ Like, how? I think we were so amazed, and it was a blessing that they actually reached out to him, which solidified everything that he wanted as far as being acknowledged as a premium basketball player,” said his mother, Tiffany.
Once a notably reserved young man, Cam has credited his Globetrotter persona , nicknamed “Silk” , with helping him develop a greater sense of confidence and self-expression.
“Whenever I can, I just get a little dance in; going to prank kids, or tap kids on shoulders and run away. Just do whatever, like throw water on people, eat their popcorn, just all kinds of silly things,” he said.
Throughout the season, Cam travels extensively with the team for approximately six months each year.
During the off-season, he lends his time and energy to his mother Tiffany’s restaurant ventures , The SoulFood Lounge in North Lawndale and SoulFood Lounge 2 in Morgan Park.
“I’ve always loved to cook. I love the idea. I know I always went to sleep watching the Food Network,” he said.
Cam has proven himself to be a genuinely talented chef, though one particular ground rule remains firmly in place.
“He doesn’t like me around when he’s cooking,” Tiffany said. “He says I talk too much, so he pushes me out of the way, and I just let him do his thing.”
Cam’s most recent venture has taken him into the world of fashion. He made his runway debut at New York’s 2026 Fashion Week, marking yet another dimension of his ever-expanding presence.
“I was pretty shy walking my first time, stepping on the stage. It’s different than stepping on the basketball court,” he said.
On the court, however, the entertainment carries a deeper and more purposeful meaning.
“The Globetrotters are all about entertainment, family, love, spreading love through the game of basketball, and just bringing different communities together,” Cam said.
These values resonate profoundly with Cam on a personal level.
“I see myself in 20 years from now owning a restaurant, becoming a speaker for my community, being able to impact the youth positively,” Cam said. “Being someone who could guide people in the right direction or give them something to look forward to.”
In the meantime, Tiffany is eagerly anticipating the next major family gathering , and fully intends to relinquish control of the kitchen.
“I know who’s cooking for Thanksgiving now, though. Since he’s doing his debut, he’s going to cook for Thanksgiving,” she said.
“If I’m around, I might,” Cam said.
In addition to everything else, Cam is currently developing his own clothing line, aptly named Lasting Love , a title that, given the breadth and sincerity of his endeavors, could not be more fitting.
