Aunt and niece taken into custody after another shoplifting run at Walmart in The Villages

An aunt and niece whose identities were already recognized to loss prevention officers were taken into custody after allegedly teaming on a nearly $1,000 shoplifting spree at the Walmart at Buffalo Ridge Plaza in The Villages.

Tommie Joe Reid, 51, of Belleview, and her niece, Corey Marie Davis, 31, of Lady Lake, were arrested on Saturday at a bustling store in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.

A loss prevention officer noticed the two and quickly identified them as suspects in past crimes at the store. The officer and a loss prevention manager kept a tight eye on the women as they moved through the aisles, packing stuff into reusable bags in two separate shopping carts.

Davis allegedly switched all of the things from her cart to her aunt’s cart shortly before fleeing. The couple then walked by all of the points of sale without making any purchases.

A Sumter County sheriff’s officer and a K-9 team apprehended the women outside the store’s car section. The stolen haul amounted to $994.90.

Both women were detained for big theft, a felony. They were booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and released after paying $2,500 bond each.

Reid has a history of deceitful behavior against law enforcement. In 2025, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office apprehended her following a traffic stop on SE Hwy. 42 near Mulberry Grove Plaza in The Villages. She was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over because its license plate was entirely obscured by a wheelchair ramp. When deputies detected a strong marijuana stench, Reid offered her cousin’s name and date of birth in a desperate attempt to conceal the fact that she had many current warrants. The deception backfired when a deputy noticed that the cousin’s photo did not match, and Reid was dragged off to Marion County Jail.
