Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities told NewsNation on Tuesday that police apprehended roughly 50,000 people in August.
NBC News first reported the preliminary arrest data, citing a senior Department of Homeland Security official.
The new figures also remained unchanged from July, when ICE officers detained 49,571 people, the highest monthly total during Trump’s second presidency.
The data also reflect a large increase from February, when arrests were down following the shooting deaths of two Americans in Minneapolis.
However, lawmakers have now approved over $70 billion to fund ICE until the conclusion of Trump’s term. According to the Associated Press, ICE arrests have increased due to a rise in new hires and a focus on Haitian immigrants, who were recently deprived of deportation safeguards.
Meanwhile, U.S. Border Patrol arrests along the Southwest border are at a record low.
According to data from the United States Customs and Border Protection, officials apprehended 9,295 persons between ports of entry in July. This marks a 6% decrease from 9,848 border arrests in June and a 7% decrease from 10,006 in May.
Since February 2025, only days after President Donald Trump began his second term, there has been an average of 7,714 border arrests every month. In comparison, Border Patrol agents made over 3.5 million arrests between FY 2023 and FY 2024.
The Rio Grande Valley Sector has made the most arrests among the nine Border Patrol sectors along the Southwest border this fiscal year, with 17,460, followed by 14,606 in the Tucson Sector and 14,293 in the El Paso Sector.
