A 33-year-old Miami man was apprehended on Aug. 24 for allegedly attempting to steal more than $8,600 from the Florida Keys Electric Cooperative by illegally altering a check.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Luis Albert Alonso has been charged with organized fraud, possession of personal identifying information with intent to deceive, grand theft, depositing bank items with intent to defraud, and using a two-way communication device to conduct a felony.
According to the sheriff’s office, Alonso took a dividend check from FKEC intended for one of his relatives, changed it, and used it to make two mobile transfers into his personal bank account totaling $8,648. The FKEC and the banks concerned discovered irregularities and informed the sheriff’s office. Detectives were able to gather evidence in the case with the assistance of the banks and FKEC.
