A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head while playing with a gun inside a Bronx house early Monday, according to sources and his family.
When police arrived at the multi-family house on Prospect Avenue near East 169th Street in Morrisania around 5:10 a.m., they discovered John Nunez dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
Nunez, who lived just blocks away, was pronounced dead on the spot by attending EMS workers, according to authorities.
According to law enforcement officials, the pair was playing about with the lethal weapon when it fired.
Nunez’s companion was arrested, but no charges were filed right away, according to reports.
It wasn’t immediately clear how the buddies gained hold of the firearm.
Women were spotted sobbing and embracing at the scene of the fatal shooting as the teen’s body was carried away.
His family is “devastated” by the loss, according to his sister Sol Nunez, who spoke with The Post Monday evening.
“They are devastated. Their heart is broken. Their heart is destroyed. Nunez, 18, stated, “This is unbelievable to us.”
According to the sister, John’s buddy and family are also dealing with the impact of the incident.
“Their family is very distraught. “I mean, it happened in their house, so you can imagine how that is,” Sol explained.
The sibling claimed that the gun that killed her brother was most likely not John’s friend’s.
And it was probably not John’s fault, as his mother was “on top of him most of the time,” she claimed.
“He was visiting his best friend’s place. So I don’t believe anything was done on purpose against him, because John was deeply loved,” Sol remarked.
John’s sibling characterized him as a “very happy person.”
“Every time he would come in the house it was just like, oh, the joy came back,” Sol replied.
Despite his immaturity, her younger brother was quite compassionate for his older sister, she claimed.
“He was always making sure that I was OK He was there for me, and it’s really heartbreaking that I won’t have that anymore,” Sol stated.
The rising senior at nearby Metropolitan High School enjoyed playing baseball and computer games, she added.
Sol stated that the two planned to enlist in the military together, following in the footsteps of their uncles who served in the Marines.
“[H]e also wanted to join the army. “He liked the action and the benefits of the military,” Sol explained.
The sibling encouraged other children to think twice before playing with weapons, stating that she did not want what happened to John to happen to anybody else.
“Please put a stop to the gun violence,” she implored. “Please stop hanging out with the wrong crowds.”
