According to jail records obtained by Fox 49 News, former Tallahassee mayor and Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is being held at Alabama’s Baldwin County Jail tonight.
According to Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney John Oxford on the “TMZ” website, the 46-year-old Gillum was arrested after purportedly failing a drug test.
In July, he was pulled over for erratic driving and charged with unauthorized possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and second-degree marijuana possession, a misdemeanor. He was booked into the Daphne City Jail before being transported to the Baldwin County Correctional Facility but was released shortly thereafter, according to jail records.
According to Oxford, Gillum participated in a random drug testing program following his arrest on July 2nd in Daphne, Alabama.
According to TMZ, Gillum did not show up for his planned drug test on the scheduled day, so he was tested at his court hearing on Thursday.
According to TMZ, the test yielded positive results for methamphetamine.
Gillum was arrested in July and discovered in possession of 3 grams of methamphetamine, 8 marijuana cigarets, 4 straws, 3 pipes, and a water pipe.
It is unclear tonight how this new indictment and arrest will affect his ongoing case.
In 2018, Gillum came within 32,000 votes of defeating Ron DeSantis for the Florida governorship. He is known as the mayor of Tallahassee and received former President Barack Obama’s endorsement for governor of Florida.
This is not Gillum’s first run-in with the law; in 2020, Miami Beach police discovered him drunk in a room with two other males, one of whom was suffering from an overdose. At the time, officers reported finding three tiny packets containing suspected crystal meth in the hotel room.
