A 20-year-old man has been taken into custody after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives claim he fled the scene of a crash that gravely injured three pedestrians during an unlawful street takeover in Miami last month.
According to an arrest affidavit, Anthony Brandon Lamelas was arrested Monday following an investigation into the July 5 incident near Northwest 25th Street and Northwest 75th Avenue.
According to investigators, deputies and Doral police officers reacted to complaints of an unlawful street takeover, including vehicles drifting, executing donuts and burnouts, and the discharge of fireworks.
Authorities stated the gathering dispersed as law enforcement arrived, with multiple vehicles exiting the scene at high speeds.
According to authorities, two women were struck by a black vehicle as they crossed the street. Surveillance video captured one of the women being tossed into the air and landing in the road before the motorist navigated around her and fled without stopping, investigators said.
Authorities say a guy who ran into the road to assist the injured woman was struck by a gold Ford Expedition.
According to detectives, the SUV went on, ran over the woman as she lay in the road, and then departed the scene without rendering aid or providing identifying information.
Investigators reported that the woman had several skull fractures, a cervical spine fracture, a fractured pelvis, and a fractured femur. The other two victims sustained a shattered clavicle, fractured hip, and other injuries.
According to detectives, surveillance footage, witness statements, license plate reader data, cellphone records, and a photographic lineup helped them identify Lamelas as the Ford Expedition’s driver.
He was nabbed Monday during a traffic stop after being discovered in the front passenger seat of an SUV. Authorities later found the Ford Expedition from a tow yard.
Lamelas was arrested and charged with two counts of fleeing the scene of an accident inflicting serious bodily injury. During a bond hearing, a judge determined probable cause and placed his bond at $50,000.
Detectives are still hunting for the driver of the black vehicle that hit the two female victims.
