Two Illinois men are facing drug charges after Indiana State Police said they discovered 21 pounds of methamphetamine hidden within an improvised firepit during a traffic stop on Interstate 65.
On Friday, July 31, just after noon, troopers stopped a Ford Escape after observing it cross the solid white fog line near the 254-mile marker. The driver, Kennedy Duran Sanchez, 29, of Chicago, and his passenger, Kevin Duran Sanchez, 27, of Romeoville, were arrested.
According to police, both men told troopers they did not understand English; therefore, contact was eased by translation software. According to authorities, both men provided conflicting travel reasons while exhibiting apprehensive demeanors.
A K-9 later notified troopers of the existence of an illicit drug. A later examination of the vehicle’s rear cargo area turned up a huge, cellophane-wrapped object. Both males apparently told authorities that the object was a firepit that belonged to someone else.
Troopers uncovered the firepit and discovered 34 cellophane-wrapped bundles consistent with narcotics trafficking. Police said other damaged shipments contained a crystal-like drug known as methamphetamine. The shipments weighed 21 pounds and tested positive for methamphetamine.
Both males were transported to the Lake County Jail. They both face preliminary charges of trafficking methamphetamine.
