Two men were taken into custody Thursday after reportedly stealing more than $27,000 in luggage from baggage carousels at Miami International Airport earlier this year, according to a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Deputies identified the suspects as David Williams (44), of Miami, and Alexander Oscar (46).
According to the investigation, surveillance video shows Williams and Oscar entering MIA through the kerbside arrivals area many times and walking to baggage carousels, where they retrieved luggage before departing the terminal and boarding “waiting vehicles”.
According to investigators, the thefts occurred in April and involved several cases at MIA.
They claimed that in one example, Williams and Oscar took $6,305 worth of bags from Carousel 26.
According to deputies, the couple also allegedly stole bags worth around $4,000 from the same carousel.
According to the article, Williams was reportedly seen on surveillance cameras on many additional occasions, including allegedly stealing luggage from carousels 22, 23, and 25 at MIA.
Traveller Asha Warner told Local 10’s Aaron Maybin that she was not surprised to hear of the crimes at the renowned airport.
“I mean, it makes sense. It’s not difficult to get started here. “People put valuables in their bags,” she explained. “They deposit jewels, money, or whatever. It sucks, which is bad, but not surprising.”
Investigators reported that the total value of stolen property in all incidents was $27,205.
Travellers are happy that detectives apprehended the men before more people became victims.
“That’s great for airport security,” Warner remarked. “I’m glad they committed to that and found the people and did what’s right.”
According to jail records, Williams is charged with six counts of third-degree grand theft, while Oscar faces two counts.
According to records, Williams was previously arrested for one count of armed robbery with a dangerous weapon in an unrelated case.
As of Friday afternoon, both men were in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre, with Williams’ bond set at $20,000 and Oscar’s at $7,500.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer also prohibited the pair from visiting MIA.
