A Massachusetts woman was taken into custody in connection with an animal cruelty case that resulted in a dog’s possible amputation.
On July 23, Salem police responded to 14 Bertuccio Ave. to assist the health, building, and fire departments, which were already on the site. Officers discovered a Pomeranian dog inside the home with a massive open wound on its left back leg, according to a police statement.
According to authorities, the wound appeared to be infected and had been left untreated for some time.
Tanya Thomas, 42, the dog’s owner, has been taken into custody and charged with animal cruelty.
The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. It is uncertain if the leg can be saved or if it will require amputation, police said.
