Jasmine Ashanti Johnston, 20, was arrested in Houston, Texas, on Sunday after fleeing a murder charge for over three weeks, according to reports from Fort Smith Police and the United States Marshals Service.
According to police, Johnston was apprehended by the United States Marshals (Gulf Coast Task Force) in Houston, Texas, on Sunday at Huckberry Park.
“This is what happens when federal, state, and local agencies work together to keep our communities safe,” said Cory Thomas, Chief Deputy United States Marshal.
Johnston was the last known suspect in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy on July 7 in Fort Smith’s 5300 block of Elm Street.
Fort Smith police acquired an arrest warrant on July 8 from the Sebastian County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, charging Johnston with first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.
On Friday, the US Marshals Service for the Western District of Arkansas issued a $5,000 reward for information leading to Johnston’s capture.
In the police statement, there was no indication of whether that money was rewarded.
A second suspect had previously been apprehended and charged in connection with the July 10 shooting.
Donny Warner, 18, was apprehended in LeFlore County, Oklahoma, and taken into custody. During the investigation, Fort Smith police identified Warner as a suspect, and warrants for his arrest include first-degree murder and aggravated robbery charges.
