An Omaha man was taken into custody Thursday for allegedly pointing a laser at an Omaha Police helicopter that was responding to a shooting call.
Josh Perez, 29, appeared in court Friday morning charged with two counts of assault on an officer, a felony. He was ordered jailed on a $5,000 bond.
According to the arrest record, at 9:40 p.m., the OPD chopper Able 1 responded to a reported shooting near 49th and Ames Avenue.
A laser struck both pilots in the eyes and directed them to Perez’s vehicle, resulting in a traffic stop. Both pilots claimed it was a direct blow to the eyes, causing discomfort and sensitivity.
“Perez admitted to pointing a laser at Able 1,” the paper says.
A HITEKK-brand laser was discovered behind the driver’s seat.
Perez is set to appear in court on August 28.
