A 33-year-old man was apprehended after he attacked a work crew and threw a knife at responding officers on Monday afternoon, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Around 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of an assault near Northeast Brazee Street and Northeast 122nd Avenue. Police said a man named Stephen T. Scazzafavo threatened a work crew in the neighborhood. He allegedly attacked one worker with a bike pump and repeatedly rammed the crew’s work van as they attempted to escape.
Officers arrived at the scene and found Scazzafavo. Police say Scazzafavo threw a knife at officers as they attempted to take him into custody. No cops were injured; however, the knife did strike and shatter the glass of a patrol car.
Scazzafavo then escaped on foot, continuing to threaten policemen with a metal hiking stick and a flashlight that doubles as a shock gun, according to authorities. He was eventually brought into custody.
According to police, one officer sustained a minor injury in the area and was treated by paramedics.
Scazzafavo was arrested in Multnomah County for first-degree criminal mischief, harassment, fourth-degree attempted assault, second-degree attempted assault, menacing, first-degree unlawful use of an electrical stun gun, tear gas or mace, unlawful use of a weapon, reckless endangerment, second-degree disorderly conduct, and three counts of attempted assault on a police officer.
The inquiry is still ongoing, and no additional information has been revealed.
