Darlington police chief apprehended for OWI after crashing into retaining wall

Darlington Police Chief Szvon D. Conway was taken into custody Friday on accusations of operating while intoxicated after colliding with a retaining wall in Monroe.

Conway, 48, of Monroe, was driving west on 13th Street when he crossed the T-intersection at 20th Avenue, according to Monroe Police.

According to police, the vehicle ran off the road to the west and collided with a retaining wall. The vehicle sustained significant damage, but the airbag did not deploy, and it was driven away from the scene.

Monroe police stated Conway’s seat belt usage was unknown. He was hurt in the crash and treated by Green County EMS.

Conway was detained on charges of first-time operating while intoxicated. He was also charged with hit-and-run, failure to inform authorities of an accident, inattentive driving, and improper lane departure.

He was later released to a responsible person while awaiting a necessary court appearance.
