Police: Teen taken into custody after shots fired leave two hospitalized at Haywood Mall

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Greenville City Dispatch officials confirmed that units responded to a shooting at Haywood Mall on Saturday.

Police said that around 1:11 p.m., an officer stationed at the mall heard what sounded like gunshots in the plaza between Macy’s and Belk. The officer headed to the area and found a woman who had been shot in the foot, then went to Belk and found a man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder and neck.

The Greenville Police Department said officers took both victims to a hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. Officers detained several people and worked to clear the mall with help from the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office. Police said no additional shots were fired after officers arrived and that they had contained the scene.

Investigators said the shooting appeared to be isolated, stemming from an argument among people who knew each other that escalated into gunfire. Police said the woman appeared to be an uninvolved bystander.

Officials said one suspect is 17, and detectives are working to identify the other people involved. Charges are pending.

Greenville City Fire Chief of Administration Tristan Johnson asked the public to steer clear of the area while first responders worked. The mall remained closed until further notice.

Police set up a pickup area on the ground floor of the parking garage near Dillard’s for drivers picking up mall-goers, and Greenlink provided an air-conditioned bus for people to wait in.
