A 65-year-old man had been apprehended within hours of reportedly shooting at another car during a road rage incident on Interstate 294 in Chicago’s northwest suburbs earlier this week, according to Illinois State Police.
Around 8:35 p.m. Monday, troopers responded to a report of an expressway shooting on northbound Interstate 294 near Touhy Avenue in Des Plaines.
According to ISP, a road rage incident escalated when Morton Grove resident Victor M. Fernandez fired a revolver at another driver. Neither the victim nor their car were hit, and no additional injuries were reported.
Troopers soon identified Fernandez’s vehicle and informed local law enforcement officials.
ISP apprehended Fernandez at his house hours later, assisted by the Morton Grove Police Department. He was charged Wednesday with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, which is a Class 1 felony.
It is unclear what triggered the road rage episode that resulted in the gunshots.
Fernandez remains in detention pending his first court appearance, according to the ISP.
