3 people charged after assault at Walmart that left 77-year-old dead: NPD

Three people have been charged in connection with a deadly assault that occurred on Sunday at the Walmart on North Military Highway, Norfolk police announced Tuesday.

Erika Mitchell, 42, and Travis White, 44, were charged with malicious wounding by mob, aggravated malicious wounding, and conspiracy to conduct a felony, according to Norfolk police. A 17-year-old girl is also facing accusations of assault and battery, aggravated malicious wounding, and conspiracy to conduct a felony.

On June 7, about 3:20 p.m., officers responded to a reported assault at Walmart on 1170 North Military Highway. According to Norfolk police, Bert Atienza, 77, was found lifeless at the scene. He died of his injuries at the hospital on Monday.

According to their first investigation, Norfolk police believe the Atienza was fighting with the suspects inside the store when the assault occurred.
