Las Vegas man sentenced to 5 years for threatening public officials

A Las Vegas man guilty of threatening to assault and murder public officials over a seven-month period was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, according to court documents.

Prosecutors recommended a 71-month sentence.

Spencer Christjencody Gear allegedly made a series of vulgar, violent threats from November 30, 2023, to July 7, 2024, including phone calls and an email threatening eight federal officials, including judges, and three state employees.

According to investigators, the threats were designed to frighten officials while they conducted their duties and to punish for actions done in their official capacities in Washington, D.C., New York, and Montana.

U.S. Marshal Gary Schofield stated that the Marshals Service responds fast to threats against the judiciary and public officials, and that the investigation demonstrated great collaboration among agencies.

After a six-day trial in February 2026, a jury found Gear guilty of nine charges of threatening a federal official and eleven counts of delivering a communication containing a threat to harm.

The FBI, the US Marshals Service, and the US Capitol Police investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Daniel Schiess, according to authorities.
