2 Halifax County natives apprehended in Virginia on over 70 felony larceny charges

Two Halifax County natives wanted in connection with dozens of copper wire thefts have been apprehended in Virginia after a multi-agency investigation.

Mark Peterson Jr. and Ashlie Baggett were captured on May 30 by officers of the Portsmouth Police Department and the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.

According to authorities, the pair was wanted on over 70 counts of felony larceny resulting from copper wire thefts reported throughout Halifax County in early 2025.

Detective Sergeant B. Edmonson conducted the investigation and obtained warrants for both suspects. The warrants were entered into a national database, indicating that Peterson and Baggett were wanted by Halifax County officials.

Investigators eventually discovered evidence that the couple lived in the Portsmouth, Virginia region. Following intensive surveillance, law enforcement officials discovered and apprehended both criminals without incident.

Peterson and Baggett are currently being imprisoned in Portsmouth, Virginia, awaiting extradition to North Carolina.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office praised the Portsmouth Police Department for its assistance in tracking down and apprehending the perpetrators.
