Two brothers have been sentenced after attacking a man and yelling derogatory and homophobic slurs at the victim, the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office said Monday. Ramiro Arellano-Montes, 41, was sentenced to five years in prison, with the possibility of parole after two years. Victor Arellano, 39, was sentenced to four years in prison and will be eligible for parole after 15 months. Both men pleaded guilty to battery that caused substantial bodily harm.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, the victim and two others were wandering in downtown Reno near the Plaza Resort Club last September when they came across another group of individuals, which included the two defendants. The defendants began making homophobic remarks to the victim and other members of his group, sparking a disagreement that escalated into a brawl. Victor ran towards the victim’s group and punched one of them in the face, according to security footage from surrounding buildings and cellphone video. The victim immediately tried to aid his friend, but the brothers began beating and kicking him. Once the victim was down, the defendants continued to kick him in the head, face, and torso before fleeing when witnesses approached and intervened.
During the incident, the victim lost consciousness and sustained a severe nose fracture with displacement of nasal bone pieces.
The Reno Police Department collaborated with the victim and his friends who observed the attack to identify the two suspects using social media. The brothers were detained four days after the assault.
