Villagers detained after allegedly attacking suspected flag stealer

Two villagers were detained for reportedly attacking a suspected flag stealer.

Joseph McKee, 83, of the Cottages at Summerchase, was driving a golf cart Wednesday evening when he began “abruptly and aggressively” chasing another man in another golf cart near the Village of Belle Aire, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. McKee assumed the man had stolen American flags over the preceding two weeks. The American flags had been set along the multimodal route.

McKee hurried to face the suspected flag stealer as he came to a stop sign. McKee was accompanied by 70-year-old Alan Reger Renouard, also from the Cottages at Summerchase.

They removed the keys from the 67-year-old’s golf cart. They also took his phone. He attempted to exit his golf cart and was promptly punched by McKee and Renouard, according to the complaint.

Both males were detained and charged with felony violence. They were both booked into the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $2,500 bonds.
