A man is facing criminal charges after police say he was caught stealing stuff from railcars near the Chicago Skyway last week.
Norfolk Southern Railroad officers responded to a security alarm on railroad property near 86th Street around 1:30 a.m. on May 1.
A Cook County Sheriff’s Office drone acquired footage of a car parked nearby with an “emergency lighting device” and a person wearing reflective apparel lifting boxes off the rails and placing them into the vehicle.
Officers discovered the car and detained 35-year-old Harold Cruz. Inside the car, officials discovered a teenage male in the front passenger seat holding a package, as well as multiple cartons of Sterilite plastic storage containers that were eventually identified as cargo from two railcars.
Investigators also found bolt cutters and a flashlight in the vehicle.
Cruz was charged with felony burglary and theft, as well as misdemeanors for trespassing and improper use of emergency lights. The teen was released to his home with no charges.
Cruz was released from detention following his May 2 court appearance.
